Will of John S. Mays
Lynchburg Will Book F, page 263
Know
all men by these presents that I, John S. Mays, a citizen of the City of
Lynchburg, County of Campbell, State of Virginia, being at this time afflicted
and thinking my disease to be consumption and that I may die at any time, I am
desirous of making provision for my Infant Son and only child Rufus Edward
Mays, with W. Miles Beach of said City, County and State.
The
conditions of the obligations are such that at my death William Beach will take
my son and act the parent towards him, viz. He will feed and clothe him, give
him medical attention in sickness, give him as good an education as his
circumstances in life may enable him to, and if in his power, have him taught
some good trade or profession, as he may think best, and last, but not least,
give special attention to his moral and religious training, and as soon as he
is old enough, to see that he goes to a Sunday School of some Evangelical
Denomination and that said Beach will pay the expenses of my funeral and the
last payment on my lot of ground on Daniels Hill, being now due, twenty-five
dollars. And in consideration of the above, I make over to him, Beach, said
lot, with house and all other improvements thereon.
Dated
in the city of Lynchburg this 23rd day of February in the year of
the Lord 1876.
